In my last COVID update (#3), I mentioned I would be posting some information for on-line training opportunities. There are three I am recommending:
- Raising your Puppy (by The Dog Gurus)
- Tricks for Fun (by The Dog Gurus)
- Scent Games (by Canine Campus Pet Resort)
I have used The Dog Guru’s comprehensive “Knowing Dogs” series to train my entire staff. I have viewed both of the programs offered above and they are a great tool to get your dog (of any age, not just puppy) started on basic manners, commands, and tricks. If you order them through Canine Campus, we will get a portion of the proceeds (see disclaimer below). I obviously would not recommend The Dog Gurus if I didn’t use them myself.
All of the Tricks for Fun training is included in the Raising your Puppy course. Even if your dog is no longer a puppy, many of the additional training issues included in Raising your Puppy are still useful if you are having problems in those areas. If you have questions on which to order, I would get the Raising your Puppy course. There is no need to purchase both.

Raising your Puppy
Puppies are the cutest, aren’t they? And that’s a good thing because they’re also a bit, um, challenging.

Scent Games
This started as a program put together by Mary Helinski and was offered as a three hour seminar taught at the Washington County Humane Society. It has also been incorporated at Canine Campus Pet Resort as an enrichment activity offered to boarding and daycare dogs.
Mary and Karen have been active in Search and Rescue work since 2007 and have trained several of their own dogs as well as being National level instructors and evaluators in Mantrailing, Area Search and Human Remains Detection. Both have been instructors/trainers for obedience classes and also have experience in many other dog training areas.
This program will provide you with a basic understanding of how important scent is for dogs and how you can use this tool to build confidence and a bond with your dog while having a ton of fun and wearing him out. It will walk you through various exercises you can easily do at home with items you would normally toss in the recycle bin. You and your dog’s progress is only limited by your imagination.
